In the early 2000’s I went to Craigmore Lake near Randalstown and I noticed an angler casting his fly. I was immediately impressed with his technique. Soon he was standing beside me because he had observed me and was also impressed. We both stopped fishing and it became a fly-casting session! That was my introduction to Pat Hughes which became a lasting friendship.
He told me he intended to take the Advanced Single-Handed assessment for APGAI Ireland. I had already undertaken the UK GAIA version and was a member of APGAI Ireland so was able to offer a few suggestions. Next time I met him, he had been successfully assessed and had qualified with flying colours.
From then on, for around twenty years we cast together, always exploring how we could improve. Between us we mentored and helped many present Instructors to achieve their qualification. Pat was a first-class member of APGAI Ireland a good friend and colleague until his sad demise.
Rest in peace Pat and thank you for your friendship and company at all the events we attended.
